In order to get an idea of what your child will be facing with the SAT, remember that you’ll be able to find multiple online resources to give sample questions in each of the SAT sections, including math, reading, and writing. Don’t neglect those. Have your child take the time to go through some of those tools and use them to help judge which sections he or she will be in need of the most assistance.

You’ll also be able to view the instructions for each section online. Go through the instructions with your child, over each section, to ensure that he or she understands what is going to be asked. This is helpful, especially if your child has a tendency to skip directions or get nervous during tests. If you go over the instructions and expectations before, this will help ease your child’s nerves on test day.

Once your child is in the test taking facility, he or she will do will to remember the following helpful hints:
  • There are no penalizations for skipping questions. That being said, reinforce that if your child is unsure of the answer to a particular question, it is better to skip it
  • Eliminate answers that are absolutely incorrect first
  • As the test is timed, don’t spend too much time on the easier questions, which are generally first-save time for the more difficult questions near the end of each section
  • Go over the general rules for writing an essay and ensure that your child is able to organize an essay using an introduction, 3 body paragraphs and a conclusion-this will be exceptionally helpful when approaching the writing section of the SAT
