Good reading skills are a must both for academic success and in your child’s everyday life. Now is the perfect time of year to encourage your child to take up reading and reap the benefits of the written word. The Tutoring Center in Orlando would like to offer a few tips on how you can achieve this.

Provide a good example

Children base a huge amount of their behavior on the behavior they see their parents exhibiting, whether consciously or unconsciously, so make sure you provide a good model for your child by opting to enjoy a book rather than watching TV or browsing the Web.

Join in

Reading aloud to younger children is a fantastic way to introduce them to reading for pleasure, and can help establish the skills children need in order to be able to read independently. Older children may not want you to read aloud to them, but they’re likely to appreciate having you around to help with difficult words or concepts. Ask them lots of questions about their favorite characters and scenes in order to keep them engaged and check they’re really absorbing the information.

Provide the resources

Your child can’t read without reading material, so make sure to keep your home well-stocked with books, magazines, graphic novels and so forth that are suited to your child’s age and interest. Creating a reading space in your home can really help encourage your child to spend more time reading. If you allow them to decorate the reading space themselves and stock it with books they love, they’re likely to want to spend a lot of time there.

Consider their learning style

Different children learn in different ways, and bearing your child’s learning style in mind can help you pick suitable ways to encourage reading. Some children will benefit from hands-on activities to engage them with reading, such as drawing or painting scenes from their favorite books after reading them. Others may appreciate listening to an audiobook at the same time as reading along with it. Observe your child to see what works best for them.

If you feel your child could benefit from one-on-one tutoring to improve their reading, or indeed any other academic area, then don’t hesitate to contact The Tutoring Center. Our Geniuses in Training academic programs include a program dedicated to strengthening reading skills. Call (407) 777-8229 to organize tutoring in Orlando today.
