Not every child is born with a fantastic memory, but there are things you can do to help your child recall information, and this is an invaluable skill when it comes to acing tests and securing good academic results overall. The Tutoring Center in Orlando would like to let you know about a few mnemonic memory tricks to make life easier.

Musical memory

Your child may not remember the names of the Founding Fathers, but we’re sure they can reel off thousands of lines of lyrics from their favorite songs. Music helps all sorts of information stick in our minds, whether we want it to or not (just think of the number of advertising jingles you can remember)! Take advantage of its earworm quality by setting educational lyrics to music.

Acronyms

Acronyms are built from the first letter of each word in a list or sentence. It’s easiest to explain through the use of an example; if your child needs to remember the Great Lakes, they can just remember ‘HOMES’ (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior).

Rhyming phrases

Just like music, a rhyme sticks in the mind much better than plain information. They’re especially helpful for remembering pieces of information such as dates and names; think of ‘in 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue’, for example.

Connections

Connect something you need to remember with something about how the word sounds, or something conceptual that sticks out to you. This can be anything. One example is remembering that lines of longitude run North to South but latitude runs East to West- how do we know? ‘Latitude’ sounds like ‘flatitude’!

Helping boost their memory isn’t the only thing you can do, but however you help, make sure you’ve considered your child’s learning style to tailor your support to their needs. If your child is struggling, you could consider hiring a tutor. The Tutoring Center offer assistance in any academic area, be it reading, grammar, math or otherwise, so call (407) 777-8229 to organize tutoring in Orlando.
