The Tutoring Center  Orlando #1 FL

Raising a child with ADHD can of course be challenging, but with the right approach you can make life far easier for both you and your child. The Tutoring Center in Orlando would like to provide a few suggestions for dealing with this often troublesome disorder.

Be honest

Many pediatricians and child psychologists stress the importance of approaching ADHD frankly and honestly. Let your child know what ADHD is and the symptoms that it presents, but also focus on the fact that it is something they have the power to control.

Stay positive

Try to keep in mind that your child is unlikely to be deliberately misbehaving. Focus on how funny and entertaining your child can be, and how their boundless energy often translates into a unique and insightful perspective on the world. Be sure to look on the bright side, too; if your child is refusing to brush their teeth but they were well-behaved whilst doing their homework, be grateful for their good behaviour rather than lamenting.

Enforce rules calmly

Being clear about consequences and enforcing punishments promptly is important to make sure that your child has a clear understanding of which behaviours are acceptable and which are not. Delayed punishments are confusing and ineffective, so avoid these.

Positive reinforcement

Reward is at least as important as punishment, in fact probably more so. Implement a reward system to incite your child to good behaviour. Make sure that you give rewards promptly after good behaviour, too, as this will help make it very clear which behaviours are being rewarded. Long-term rewards (a new toy if they study hard all month, for example) are likely to be confusing or unattractive for children with short attention spans, so focus on short-term rewards.

A healthy body…

Diet, exercise and sleep are important for all children, but are even more critical for children with ADHD. Make sure your child isn’t exposed to sugary junk food, is getting an hour of physical activity a day, and has a calm place free of distractions in which to sleep.

It may be the case that your child is in need of some extra assistance with their learning. Luckily, The Tutoring Center is here for you.
